Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis)
Type: Herbs
Latin Name: Radix Ophiopogonis
Chinese Name: Mai Dong
Mai Dong, or also popularly known as dwarf lilyturf tuber, is a type of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herb that is commonly used to promote lung, stomach and heart health.
In TCM theory, Mai Dong targets the heart, lungs and stomach with its anti-inflammatory and detoxification qualities.
Firstly, Mai Dong nourishes the stomach by promoting the production of stomach fluids to moisten intestines. This can help to ease symptoms such as dryness in mouth, thirstiness, pain in stomach and abdomen, hunger without appetite, vomiting and constipation.
Second, Mai Dong improves lung health by moistening the lungs and removing heatiness caused by hot weather, dehydration, and consumption of fried and oily food. Mai Dong is often used for relieving dry coughs with little phlegm or blood, pain in throat, sore throats, hoarseness and discomfort in vocal cords.
Lastly, Mai Dong calms one's mind and induces tranquilisation, reducing restlessness, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, poor memory, irritability and palpitations.
